  • Rogue Warrior - January 5, 2010

Rogue Warrior is set in 1986, as Dick Marcinko and two fellow warriors infiltrate North Korea to track down a mole within the army that has information on a top secret ballistic missile project. Unfortunately for Dick, his teammates are killed by a grenade shortly after they attempt to eliminate a patrol. Disregarding calls from his commanding officers to abort the mission and escape the country, Dick forges ahead, blasting a path through North Korea and Russia as he tries to destroy the missiles before they can be used against the West. The plot is rather poorly developed, as Dick ignores orders, and makes his own decisions on how to kill as many communists as possible over the eight missions of the game. Unfortunately, there are so many negative aspects of the game, it's almost impossible to cover all of them. For example, the stealth mechanics are so broken that it doesn't really involve stealth at all. Ninety percent of the enemies you approach have their backs turned to Dick at all times, allowing him to sprint forward and take them out. The AI completely disregards your footsteps, leaving them wide open for instant kills. Clearly, stealth isn't required but going in guns blazing doesn't solve anything either. See, one of the problems with the gunplay of Rogue Warrior is that the hit detection is extremely hit or miss. You may be able to fire one round and instantly kill an enemy, or you can empty entire clips and they'll remain standing, even if your shots seem like they should result in multiple headshots. You can even throw grenades or detonate explosive barrels and enemies will shrug off damage as if nothing happened. This is coupled with the fact that the accuracy of your weapons is pretty horrible. Even looking down the sights of your gun doesn't help, and forget trying to fire from cover; your reticule immediately turns to a tiny dot that isn't accurate with your shot placement at all. You'll quickly choose to skip this in favor of melee kills.Fortunately, you don't have to deal with the stupidity of these enemies for long; it's possible to beat Rogue Warrior in two hours or less. I managed to beat it in an hour and a half, and that included a few times when the game froze on me. However, that raises another significant issue, which is that you're paying full price for this horrible experience. The console versions of the game are sixty bucks, and the PC version is only slightly cheaper at fifty, but these prices are way too exorbitant for the poorly constructed single player game. If you were wondering about multiplayer as well, don't bother; there's only deathmatch and team deathmatch options, but no one is playing this game online, probably because the few people that were suckered into this purchase are regretting the fact that their wallet is lighter. If you were hoping that the visuals could be a possible saving grace for Rogue Warrior, you're definitely out of luck. Everything about this game looks like a PS2 or Xbox game at best, and a first generation PS3/360 game at worst. Whether it's the bland environments, slowdown, screen and texture tearing, stiff character model movement or death animations that look blatantly unrealistic, Rogue Warrior is poor game all around. As far as sound goes, overwhelming attention was paid to Mickey Rourke's profanity laced commentary, which makes Marcinko seem like a Tourette's afflicted soldier hopped up on adrenaline. As a result, you can't help but laugh at the stupidity of the comments, as well as how absurd the credit sequence is, which features a beat and remixed version of profane outtakes.

  • DIRT2 - December 16, 2009

DIRT_2_teaserIn Dirt 2, you assume the role of an up-and-coming race driver who's competing on the off-road circuit against such pros as Ken Block and Travis Pastrana for the first time. That's a daunting prospect, but one of the many great things about Codemasters' latest racer is that you can have a lot of fun with it and end the lengthy Dirt Tour career mode a champion regardless of your skill level. Your opponents aren't pushovers; in fact, they put up a believable fight from start to finish, but the vehicle handling and damage is forgiving, the difficulty level can be altered before every event, and a slick flashback feature gives you the option to instantly replay portions of a race if you make a mess of them. Dirt 2 isn't as realistic as some of the other excellent off-road racers that have come before it, but it's as accessible and exciting as any of them. Your career gets off to an auspicious start when you're presented with your first car: a Subaru Impreza that belonged to the late, great Colin McRae. Like all of the 35-plus cars in the game, its performance is measured in ratings from one to 10 for acceleration, top speed, and handling. Your rides are relatively slow as your career gets underway, but as you move up through the ranks, you get to upgrade them; not one part at a time, but with the purchase of kits designed for different event types. Those upgrades are mandatory, but you also have the option to tinker with settings before each race, and the good news is that even if you don't know your downforce from your differential, there's a good chance that you can do so with some success. That's because there are only seven variables, which are all clearly explained to you, and there are only five different settings for each. It's not deep, but it's fun to play around with, and any changes that you make are immediately noticeable once you get behind the wheel. dirt2nov19Regardless of whether you're driving a rally car, a trophy truck, or a buggy, Dirt 2's responsive controls are up to the job of keeping your wheels where you need them to be as you navigate tight corners, big jumps, expanses of shallow water, and transitions between loose surfaces and tarmac. Playing with a gamepad is recommended, but even the default keyboard controls work great. Every vehicle in your ever-expanding garage handles differently, but not so much so that climbing out of one and into another is ever jarring. All of the vehicles look great (both inside and out), can be customized with different unlockable liveries and interior decorations, get covered in great-looking dust and mud as you drive them, and can be damaged and deformed beyond recognition if you lose control even for a second. You can choose to play with damage that's purely cosmetic or that'll have an impact on your car's performance, though it's worth mentioning that even if you opt for the latter, the adverse effects are quite minimal. Sure, a wobbly wheel or a damaged engine will slow you down a bit, but you're never going to be limping around the track and fighting to keep yourself moving in something resembling a straight line. It's possible to total your car if you crash headlong into something at high speed, but even that doesn't necessarily have to mark the end of your race if you haven't used all of your flashbacks already. dirt-2-preview_screenDepending on which of the six difficulty levels you're racing at, you have up to five flashbacks at your disposal that you're free to use at any point during a race. Using them could hardly be simpler; you initiate an instant replay of the last 10 to 15 seconds, and then resume playing from any point. While not entirely original, it's a great system because even minor mistakes can be extremely costly when you're racing at speeds well in excess of 100 miles per hour with your tires clinging to the very edge of traction. Having to start one of the lengthier eight-lap races over because of a small error would be frustrating, and while the flashbacks might seem like cheating, knowing that you have them at your disposal encourages you to push yourself rather than just get to the front of the field and then drive more cautiously to the finish.

  • Need For Speed SHIFT - November 4, 2009

938046703 Let me step back a little bit before delving into the racing experience. NFS Shift returns to the track-based racing of old (and ProStreet) rather than the open-world stuff seen in most of the modern titles. You'll find mainstays like Laguna Seca, Willow Springs and Nurbergring as the backdrops to your tire burning, and each of these are brought to life excellently. They're not 100% accurate compared to their real-world counterparts however as Slightly Mad has tweaked the scenery to provide more compelling views in spots that were a little drab, but the course layouts are indeed intact, which is what's important. Given the course selection in the game (totalling somewhere around the 20 track mark), it's of little surprise that practically every meter of road in the game is fun to drive. shiftnfs-shift-screenshot01-1024x576 Unlike pretty much every modern day Need for Speed title, there's zero story involved, and I'm very happy about that. The closest thing you're going to get to some sort of tale is the voiceover that you'll hear at the start of the game, telling you that you've been given a chance to prove yourself in a BMW M3 around Brands Hatch before winning some cash and choosing your own ride. After that, the voice only returns to explain new events and the like, but never to tell you that the cops are on your tail or that your love interest can introduce you to some jackass in a garage. Nope, this pretty much as pure of a racing game as you can find, and I for one am very thankful for that.
